Get in Shape for hunting season. If you climb mountains very much you'll need good cardiovascular health and even if your a flatlands hunter it can be tuff to drag a good sized buck out of the woods by yourself.
Don't wait till right before the season to start any type of workout, try to target at least 2 months before the season to do ANY type of activites to help you out.
Don't think you have to be an olympic runner or arnold shwarzennegger or Richard Simmons (for neal) to make you a better hunter, but certainly being in shape enough to go places where big bucks hang out certainly would help.
Some activites you could do without joining a gym would be walking, jogging, taking scouting trips in the woods, jogging, riding bicycle, mowing your yard with a PUSHMOWER, playign an active sport with your kids, (basketball etc.) chopping wood by hand with an ax (one of my favorite workouts) or use our vast national forests and become a hiker.
Or you could get serious and join a gym if there's one close enough to you. prices range anywhere from $20 a month up to $50 a month at some of the nicer YMCA's. The current ate for most FAMILY memberships is $60 a month at the YMCA (best value if your wife has a new years resolution to lose 10 lbs and if you have kids that are in need of swimming lessons and some of the many more classes they offer)
As far as training goes start out small and work your way up. Don't plan on running or jogging a mile and a half the first day if the only time you have ran the past 10 years is when bees or angry husbands have chased you!! ;D
A typical pyramid workout would have you starting out walking a mile and a half, for two or three days then start jogging a half mile of it at a time till you build up enough to jogg the whole thing. Here would be an example to follow. This can be done outside or on a tread mill.
WEEK 1: Walka mile and a half every other day, or if you don't get muscle soreness from this you can do it on consecutive days.
WEEK 2: 1st day jogg the first 1/2 mile then walk the rest, TAKE DAYS OFF IN BETWEEN this as you WILL get sore from running
WEEK 3: Jog 1 mile and walk the rest, remember to altrenate rest and exercise days.
WEEK 4: Jog 1 mile and walk the rest, remember to alternate rest and exercise days
WEEK 5: You should be able to job it all by now if you have stuck by the program, more or less depending on your starting shape, weight etc.
So there you have it a little over a month of excercies will have you ready to chase whitetails all over the VA woods come next fall.
