I can't say i have ever put my scope on something and then had to say "oh nuts that's a hunter!!!" However i think alot of people do make that mistake nowadays, being in to big a hurry or not being taught better. If you see movement in the woods but can't identify it, try your best to know what it is BEFORE you raise your gun up and look through that scope, doesn't matter if the safety is on or not!! Beleive me if he's a buck that has horns YOU WILL SEE THEM WITH YOUR EYES.......only rarely have i ever scoped a deer that i thought was a doe only to then see horns. Sure i got burnt by this once, i jumped some deer up and one stopped beside a pine tree that obstructed my view of it's head, i figured it for a doe while it stood there and looked at me, i had the scope on it just kinda watching for a minute or two, and then it turned it's head and took off and to my suprise it was a nice 8 point!! I coulda killed it probably 20 times if i had wanted to just shoot at soemthing i wasn't sure of. But i would rather lose a buck or two in my lifetime than shoot a doe out of season or worse another hunter or person just because i seen movement behind a bush or tree.

That is why I always have a pair of binoculars around my neck. If I cannot tell what movement is I use them to make the ID. You are right about scoping something that you do not know what it is. My thought is never point a gun at something unless you positively know what it is and you are prepared to pull the trigger.

I 'm with both of you. I've let some nice deer walk just not knowing what was on the other side aways make sure what it is and what is on the other side

Good point with the Binoculars. I didn't inlcude them cause i rarely carry them in the woods. I could see how helpful they would be though. Thanks for the input add on Rocketman

Bounty,
Do you ever use binoculars? I never have....figure I can see 100 yards at least. Every thing I read says to use them.... Curious if very many do? Let's hear it.

yeah...binos are a pain in the butt... but you guys are dead on... if your scope is pointed at something... so is the barrell...and any movment with a bullet in the chamber or even the tube can discharge a round.. I have heard of guys with pointy rubber tipped rifle bullets in tubes going off unexpectedly....

I carry all the time...... like to know if I see on what it is before it gets to close........ Good for scouting. The movement part...... if your looking without bino's your still looking and moving.

I always have 8x40s with me. Don't dig them out until I get in the stand, but then I always have them around my neck on stand. I use one of those harness rigs & movement is pretty minimum as compared to taking them off a hanger.

Just look twice and be patient. Rarely do you need to rush a shot. And if you find yourself rushing DON'T shoot!
